Overview

In accordance with new security regulations, applicants or visitors are NOT allowed to enter the American Institute in Taiwan while carrying any of the following items: 

  • Weapons or explosive materials of any kind
  • Sharp objects such as scissors, pen knives or nail files
  • Laptops or larger electrical/electronic devices
  • Any bags, backpacks, briefcases, suitcases, leather bags, cloth bags, or shoulder bags larger than 18 x 14 x 8 inches
  • Food and liquid items
  • Cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, match boxes, or lighters 

This list is not exhaustive. Other items may be prohibited at the discretion of security staff. 

The American Institute in Taiwan cannot store prohibited items for you. Do not bring prohibited items with you as you will not be able to enter the American Institute in Taiwan. You must make arrangements to store these items before entering. 

Small personal electronic devices (PEDs) will be permitted in the American Institute in Taiwan Consular Section waiting area only when all the following requirements are met: 

  • Small PEDs must undergo all of the procedural security requirements at the entrance
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functions must be disabled while in the consular waiting area
  • Use of PEDs for audio or video recording and photography are prohibited
  • Use of PEDs for making or answering phone calls in the inner interview waiting rooms or near any interview windows are prohibited
  • All PEDs must be put away prior to going to the interview windows

Small PEDs include cellphones, smart phones, iPods and MP3 players, iPads and other tablet devices, handheld gaming devices, smartwatches, and wearable electronic fitness devices. 

Due to security considerations, there is no information window for walk-in visitors at the American Institute in Taiwan.  Access to the Consular Section waiting area is limited to the following: 

  • Applicants;
  • Parents or legal guardians of applicants under 18 years old;
  • Aides of disabled applicants 

Visa appointment holders must have an appointment confirmation page and may not be admitted more than 15 minutes before or after their appointment time.
