Overview

SWT program is a U.S. cultural exchange program that allows foreign university students to work, live and travel in the U.S. during their summer vacation.
The length of the program each year is limited to the shorter of four months or the length of the long break between academic years at the school they attend. Students must return to their home country prior to the start date of their university classes.
Program sponsors are responsible for selecting participants for the Exchange Visitor Program, as well as supporting and monitoring them during their entire program stay. SWT participants need to receive DS-2019 from their U.S. program sponsor to be able to apply for the U.S. J-1 visa.

How to Apply

Step 1

Each applicant must pay the visa application fee.

Step 2

Each applicant must complete the Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application (DS-160) form.

  • If the applicants are using an agency, the students must indicate in their DS-160 at "Address Line 2" the recruiting SWT Agency’s name;
Step 3

Each applicant must prepare all documents required for the SWT program, and provide them on the day of their appointment:

  • A passport valid for travel;
  • DS-160 Confirmation page, with the agency’s name written/stamped on it (if applicable);
  • One color photo, 5x5 cm, taken within the last 6 months (only required if unable to upload photo with DS-160 online application);
  • Form DS-2019 ("Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status", signed by the applicant;
  • A confirmed job offer with contact information for the U.S. employer, including full name, phone number, address, and email address;
  • Student and Exchange Visitor International System (SEVIS) fee receipt;
  • Original Grade Book for all years of study signed/stamped by the university, OR University Transcript with wet seal;
  • *“Situatia Academica” (for resident applicants only) for all years of study signed/stamped by the university.
Step 4

Each applicant must schedule an appointment using the online appointment system by clicking on the Schedule Appointment button after logging in.

  • SWT Agencies (SWT Business Users) can schedule multiple applicants during one session. The only limitation is set by the number of slots allocated. The appointment system works on a first come – first served basis. Before adding the applicants, please make sure that your students do not have profiles in the system already. If they have one, the agency should add them by option: “Add Applicant by UID”.

Remember: Applicants are limited to the number of times they can reschedule their appointments. Please plan accordingly so that you are not required to pay another visa application fee. Visa application fees are nonrefundable.

Step 5

The applicants will bring their documents on the day of the interview.

  • If the applicants are using an agency, the list of students should be sent in an Excel spreadsheet, approved by the Consular Section, at least a week before the interviews. SWT Business Users can request the template by sending an e-mail to ChisinauVisas@state.gov.
Step 6

Each applicant must visit the U.S. Embassy on the date and time of the visa interview.

Step 7

Each applicant must collect his/her passport in person from the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Moldova.

Note: The SWT Business User can perform steps 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 for the applicants.
