Effective Sunday, June 12 at 12:01 a.m. EDT, the CDC rescinded its Order requiring all airline or other aircraft passengers to show a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 to board any aircraft destined to the United States from a foreign country. Of note, CDC’s Order requiring proof of vaccination for non-U.S. citizen nonimmigrants to travel to the United States is still in effect. For more information see Requirement for Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination for Air Passengers.

Additionally, if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, or believe you may have been exposed to the Novel Coronavirus, you are strongly encouraged to postpone your appointment by at least 14 days.

Secretary Blinken, in consultation with the Department of Homeland Security, has temporarily expanded the ability of consular officers to waive the in-person interview requirement for individuals applying for a nonimmigrant visa in the same classification. Previously, only those applicants whose nonimmigrant visa expired within 24 months were eligible for an interview waiver. The Secretary has temporarily extended the expiration period to 48 months. This policy is in effect until December 31, 2021. We strongly encourage applicants who meet this criteria, to follow the guidance on applying via the mail-in (Interview Waiver) process and NOT schedule a visa interview. See guidance here on ustraveldocs.com. This change will allow consular officers to continue processing certain nonimmigrant visa applications while limiting the number of applicants who must appear at a consular section, thereby reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission to other applicants and consular staff. Travelers are encouraged to review the website of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for detailed information on what services are currently available as well as eligibility information and instructions on applying for a visa without an interview.

The U.S. Mission to Latvia understands that many visa applicants have paid the visa application processing fee and are still waiting to schedule a visa appointment. We are working diligently to restore all routine visa operations as quickly and safely as possible. In the meantime, rest assured that the U.S. Mission will extend the validity of your payment (known as the MRV fee) until September 30, 2023, to allow all applicants who were unable to schedule a visa appointment as a result of the suspension of routine consular operations an opportunity to schedule and/or attend a visa appointment with the already paid fee. Please continue to monitor this site for information on when we will return to routine visa operations.

Nonimmigrant Visas

Due to a limited interviewing capacity the United States Embassy in Riga, Latvia is only able to provide a small number of nonimmigrant visa services to third country nationals not resident in the Embassy’s consular district of Latvia. We are not able to serve non-resident applicants for exchange visitor, student and temporary work visas or consider group interview requests from non-resident visa applicants. Visa interview appointment wait times for non-residents are significantly longer than for other applicants.

We strongly encourage non-immigrant visa applicants who are renewing their visas and certain first time student visa applicants to follow the guidance on applying without an interview and NOT schedule a visa interview.

Emergency appointment requests by nonimmigrant visa applicants not resident in Latvia:

We are generally not able to consider emergency (expedited) appointment requests from non-resident visa applicants who are not living in Latvia. We have limited capacity to assist Ukrainian, Belarussian and Russian applicants who need to travel immediately. In this case, please follow the guidance at ustraveldocs.com or contact the call center at +371-6609-2000 for information on how to request an emergency appointment. These requests need be well justified and are reviewed on a case by case bases by the consular section chief.
