Official U.S. Department of State Visa Appointment Service

Schedule your appointment

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Citizens of qualified countries may be also able to visit the U.S. without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program. If you do not qualify for the Visa Waiver Program or are traveling to study, work, or participate in an exchange program, you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa.

Scheduling your appointment

Applicants for U.S. visas are required to appear in person for an appointment at the Visa Application Center (VAC) and the visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. You must schedule the VAC appointment at least one day before the interview appointment date. You can schedule both appointments, either online using this website or through the call center.

To schedule your nonimmigrant visa appointment, you must have the following information and documents available:

  • A passport valid for travel to the United States with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States (unless country-specific agreements provide exemptions). If more than one person is included in your passport, each person desiring a visa must submit an application.
  • Your visa application (MRV) fee payment receipt
  • Your DS-160 confirmation page
  • Your e-mail address
  • If applicable, required documents based on visa class (such as a petition approval for petition-based visas; more information about visa types and information about each can be found on the Department of State's website).

Applicants are limited to the number of times they can reschedule their appointments. Please plan accordingly so that you are not required to pay another visa application fee.

Applicants under 14 years of age or over 80 years of age from the date of submission are not required to appear for a nonimmigrant visa interview at any Embassy/Consulate in India. Such applicants may submit their visa applications through the Interview Waiver.

Appointment wait times

All applicants are processed as efficiently as possible and the U.S. Embassy or Consulate strives to keep the wait time for appointments as short as possible. That said, the earlier you book your appointment, the more likely you are to be able to get the interview date and time you want.

Nonimmigrant visa applicants are encouraged to apply at least three months in advance of the intended date of travel.

Although visa processing time is typically seven to ten working days, processing time for specific cases may vary due to individual circumstances and other special requirements.

Holidays and closures

The U.S. Embassy or Consulate and Visa Application Centers observe both U.S. and India holidays and will be closed on those dates. The Call Center services will only be closed on Saturdays, Christmas, New Years, Holi, Diwali, Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti.

Embassy/Consulate and Visa Application Center dates of closure

To see which dates the Embassy/Consulate and Visa Application Center will be closed, visit India's official embassy website.

In addition to U.S. and Indian holidays, please note the following Consular Section closures for visa applicants.
