Prepare Documents

Overview

Cases processed through NVC

After the proper petition has been filed with USCIS, the National Visa Center (NVC) schedules visa interviews for most immigrant visa cases. The NVC also sends immigrant visa case files, containing the petition and all forms and documents submitted by or on behalf of an applicant, to the U.S. Embassy where the applicant will be interviewed. Take the following actions after notification from the NVC that your interview has been scheduled:

  • Step 1: Carefully review the information sent by the NVC noting the date, time, and location of your immigrant visa interview.
  • Step 2: Prepare for the medical examination and vaccination.
  • Step 3: Ensure that all required original documents will be available at the time of the interview. Any documents that you submitted to the NVC will be transferred to the interviewing officer. Please visit this link for list of documents.
  • Step 4: Obtain the required photographs.

Cases not processed through NVC and K-1 Visas

Petitioners residing in Indonesia must file the Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, by mail with the USCIS Dallas Lockbox facility or online at https://www.uscis.gov/i-130. Please visit USCIS website for detail.

U.S. Embassy Jakarta may accept filing of the Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative for petitioners who believe they have exceptional situations that would merit an exception from filing to the USCIS.

After the Form I-130 petition is approved by the Immigrant Visa Unit at U.S. Embassy, Jakarta, petitioner/beneficiary will receive an email notification with an instruction package with the list of documents for the visa interview.

For K-1 visas, Form I-129F petitions filed with the USCIS in the United States are forwarded to NVC upon approval.  After review, NVC forward the petition to the Immigrant Visa Unit at U.S. Embassy, Jakarta. After receiving an approved I-129F petition from USCIS via NVC, the Immigrant Visa Unit will email the Instruction Package to beneficiary.  Please visit this link for list of documents the applicant must prepare and hand carry to the K1 visa interview.

The Instruction Package also contains instructions on how to obtain the needed documents. Please do not send any of the documents to the Immigrant Visa Unit in advance of the visa interview. U.S. law forbids us from advising or assisting IV applicants to qualify for visas or other immigrant benefits.  An applicant is personally liable for the accuracy of all statements and documents submitted in connection with his or her visa application.  The penalties for false statements include permanent visa ineligibility.
