Renew My Visa

Overview

The U.S. visa application process is the same whether you are applying for the first time or renewing your visa. However, if you are renewing you may qualify for waiver of the interview requirement, allowing you to use the Hungarian Postal Service to send your application and supporting documents to the Embassy, and eliminating the need to come to the Embassy. Use of the delivery service does not guarantee visa issuance. Please note that it can take up to 2-3 business days to send your documents to the Embassy.

Further, we may, in some cases, after reviewing an application submitted by the applicant, require a person to appear for an in-person interview.

Qualifications
    1. You may be eligible to apply for a U.S. visa without an interview based on your age:
      • If you are 13 and younger
      • If you are 80 and older

If you are applying (first time or renewal) in the consular district of your normal residence.

    2. You may be also eligible to apply for a U.S. visa without an interview if:
      1. You seek to renew your visa in the same visa class within 48 months of the expiration of your previous visa, in class other than H, E, L, P, and R.
      2. F and M visa holders are only eligible to renew their visas if they continue participation in the same program as the previous visa, even if at a different institution, or attend the same institution in a different program. J visa holders are eligible for interview waiver if their Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) number has not changed from the previously issued visa.
        • First-time applicants
          • First-time F and M applicants are eligible for interview waiver if they are citizens of the Visa Waiver Program participating countries and their ESTA application was not denied. If the F and M applicant is not a citizen of the Visa Waiver country, the applicant still may be eligible for an interview waiver if he/she was issued any class of a US visa previously.
          • First-time J applicants are eligible for interview waiver if they are “Academic” J visa applicants: secondary and university students, professors, research scholars, short-term scholars and specialists.
          • First-time H2-A and H2-B applicants are also eligible for interview waiver.
H, E, L, P, and R visa applicants are not eligible to renew their visa unless it expired within the past 48 months (see below).

        • You must not be ineligible to receive a visa under U.S. visa law.
        • If you were ever refused a U.S. visa in the same category as your current application, the refusal must have been overcome.

The Consular Section reserves the right to request that an applicant appear in person for an interview after reviewing his or her application

How to Apply

Step 1

Complete the non-immigrant Visa Electronic Application (DS-160) form.

Step 2

Log-in to our online applicant system and create a profile to pay the visa application (MRV) fee. Once logged in, choose “Schedule appointment”. As you go through the process you will answer the interview waiver questions which will evaluate your eligibility to apply for a visa without an interview.

Step 3

After you answer the questions, you will be prompted to pay the visa fee. If you are eligible to apply for a visa without an interview, you will print out the “Application interview waiver Letter” which you will include with your visa application.

Step 4

Gather your DS-160 confirmation page, MRV fee receipt, current and previous passports, photo, and a letter explaining your travel purpose and itinerary. Depending on the visa category, you may require additional documentation and a reciprocity fee. Please refer to your specific visa category page for additional required documents.
