Overview

Once your visa is approved, Correos de Costa Rica will deliver your passport to the location you specified when you scheduled your appointment for you to retrieve. The passport will be available for pick up for 14 days at the selected location, after that it will be returned to the embassy.

Correos de Costa Rica is offering to the clients an optional insurance for protection in case of theft or loss of their passport, therefore, you are not obliged to take the offered insurance if you do not want it.

PREMIUM Services: delivery and pick up of documents

As of November 1, 2021, all documents sent or received in most branches of Correos de Costa Rica will have a cost of $10.17 (or its equivalent in colones according to the official exchange rate established by the Central Bank).

This change affects ALL active visa applications, both future appointments and applications in process within the Embassy. If your passport/documents are ready for pick up, you must do so before October 30, 2021 to avoid charges for the Premium service.

If you want to receive your documents free of charge, you must access your profile through https://cgifederal.secure.force.com/?language=English&country=costarica and update your pick up location to "Correo Central - 1000" (Avenida 1-3 Calle 2. Frente al Club Unión. San José), which is marked as "free of charge".  

Please have in mind the following important points when selecting your document delivery location:

  • If you process a shipment to the Embassy, ​​through a Premium branch, either by Dropbox (https://ustraveldocs.com/cr/cr-svc-visachild.asp), 221g (https://ustraveldocs.com/cr/cr-niv-221ginfo.asp) or Priority "Correos de Costa Rica" (https://ustraveldocs.com/cr/cr-niv-visarenew.asp) these will have a shipping cost of $ 10.17 (or its equivalent in colones according to the official exchange rate established by the Central Bank).

  • If you wish to send documents free of charge, you must do so at the branch designated as "free of charge", which is "Correo Central - 1000" (Avenida 1-3 Calle 2. Frente al Club Unión. San José).

  • Each operation of sending or receiving documents  at any  Correos Premium location will have the previously indicated cost of $10.17. The amount will be paid at the Premium branches for each procedure you carry out

  • For the "Premium Delivery" or home delivery service, which has a cost of $ 11.87, it is mandatory that you enter all your shipping information in the provider's portal that is presented at the moment of scheduling your appointment.

  • Please note that if you select the “free of charge” location you will likely experience long waiting times for both delivering and picking up documents due to long lines.

  • If you wish to make a change of delivery location, we clarify that this can be done BEFORE your visa is issued.

Collecting Your Documents

Correos de Costa Rica provides facilities where your passport is held for pick-up in case your passport cannot be delivered to your chosen delivery address. You will see a list of Correos de Costa Rica passport/visa collection locations when you schedule your interview and can choose the most convenient location from that list.

In the case of urgency, we recommend to select the branch "Zapote - 2010" in San José for document pick up. This branch has the option of delivery on the same day (from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm) that your visa is issued and / or printed. The processing as an urgent case must be authorized by the consular officer, so you must remember to notify it in the consular interview to be considered.

Supporting Documents

To collect your passport, you must submit original and photocopy of an official identification with photo.

If you would like to authorize a third party to collect your passport from the document collection office on your behalf (even in case of family members), the representative must present:

    • Original and photocopy of the government-issued photo ID of the authorized person that will retrieve the passport for identification.
    • A photocopy of the government-issued photo ID of the passport owner.
    • A letter of authority, signed by you, authorizing your representative to collect your passport. The letter of authority must contain the following information:
      • Your representative's full name as shown on their government-issued photo ID
      • Your name, number of your government-issued ID, and signature

If the applicant is under the age of 18, the following documents are required:

      • An original, signed letter of authority from either of the applicant's parents
      • A clear photocopy of the government-issued photo ID belonging to the parent who signed the applicant's letter of authority
      • A clear photocopy of the birthday certificate of the minor, if the he/she is older than 12 years old you can provide the Identity Card for Minors (Tarjeta de Identificación de Menores -TIM-) instead.
      • The representative's original government-issued photo ID

Note: In case of a group/family, a single letter of authority with the required information for each of the applicants will be accepted.

Change Delivery Options

You may change your preferred document delivery address call center until 11:59 p.m. the day of your interview appointment. There is no cost to change your delivery preferences.
