Submitting 221(g) Documents

Overview
The U.S. Consulate General may give you a 221(g) letter directing you to submit additional documents or information related to your visa application. Your application will be kept on hold at the Consulate General until you submit those documents.
All documents and information requested in a 221(g) letter should be submitted as instructed on the sheet the officer provided to the applicant, either by email or – if an original document is specifically requested -- at the nearest CITIC Bank document collection office within one year from the date you received the 221(g) letter. Failure to submit the required information within one year will result in the termination of your visa application. You will be required to submit a new visa application and pay all associated fees in order to continue with your visa application process.
How to Submit 221(g) Documents
Electronic Copies via Email
If you received instructions to send via email an electronic copy of a document, please follow the instructions provided on the letter provided by the Consular Section.
Original Documents via Mail
If you received specific instructions to submit original documents, please take the following steps.
Step 1

Step 2
Go to the nearest CITIC Bank document collection office. Take your 221(g) submission slip, the 221(g) letter given to you at the Consulate General, and all documents requested in your 221(g) letter. If you submit your passport again, then do not remove the sticker pasted on the back of the passport.
Effective January 18, 2023, applicants can pick up their passport and submit their documents (221(g) documents, Interview Waiver Application) at the following 5 CITIC locations for free:
- Beijing - 1F, Bldg E, No 8, Fuhua Mansion, Chaoyangmen North Street, Beijing
- Guangzhou - 1, 2 Floor, CITIC Plaza, 233 North Tianhe Road, Guangzhou, Guangdong
- Shanghai - Pacific Plaza, GF, No 1168 Nanjing West Rd, Shanghai
- Shenyang - Nanhu branch, No.50, Cai Ta Street, He Ping District, Shenyang, Liaoning

Wuhan - No. 2 Nanjing Road, Jiang'an District, Wuhan, Hubei
Applicants can select any other CITIC pickup / drop-off locations against a fee of RMB 77 to be paid at the counter when picking up/ dropping off their documents (221(g) documents, Interview Waiver Application).
EMS Premium home delivery remains available against a fee of RMB 106 per passport, regardless of visa type or destination, to be paid on delivery to the EMS courier.
Premium delivery service fee is paid on delivery and not refundable.
Our authorized partner will issue invoice (Fapiao) towards premium delivery service. Please click https://fapiao.vfsglobal.com/invoice, fill in your UID and transaction no. (CITIC) / AWB no. (EMS) in the electronic form. We suggest you submitting the request 5-7 working days after payment.
Please note we will not be able to issue invoice (Fapiao) towards the MRV fee.
Step 3
Drop-off your documents and the 221(g) submission slip at the CITIC Bank document collection office. CITIC Bank gives you a copy of your airway bill as a receipt for your documents.
Note: Please do not submit any documentation in a sealed envelope as this will be rejected by the US Embassy /Consulate. If you use an envelope to submit documents, it must remain open at all times.
Step 4
CITIC Bank delivers your documents to the Consulate General.
Step 5
CITIC Bank returns your documents and your passport to you at your chosen document delivery pickup location. If issued, your passport will contain your visa. You may also receive a new 221(g) letter.
